End of week assignment - Texturing 1.

This week our assignment was to unwrap our goblet and texture it. We did the unwrapping in Maya using the tools provided, and we textured it in Photoshop working with different layers and techniques. We were also given Wacom tablets to use for drawing on the computer, which is nice because I have no drawing skills at all!

My timetable for the week was planned like this:

Monday 14-16: Unwrap
Tuesday 14-16: Get angry at the old unwrap and do it over
Wednesday 14-16: Argue with the tools but finally manage to get a good unwrap. Started texturing.
Thursday 14-16: Finish the diffuse, normalmap and specular map.

We were tasked with drawing two scenes, the first one of a house exterior with 2 point perspective.

The second one of a house interior, also with 2 point perspective. I felt I had to color the bottom one so you could actually see what the Hell it was.

Now I was ready to tackle the goblet head on! Firstly I had to decide on what it would actually look like when textured, so I drew a few examples of different variations just to get me started. I drew up 3 variations; Realistic, mechanical and one made completely out of bone. I decided to go with the realistic version.

I then unwrapped the goblet using the unwrapping tool from the Bonus Tools in Maya, which unwrapped the tree with little to no effort once it actually worked. I then cleaned up the UV, making sure I used as much of the texture space I could. I then textured it by creating a Diffuse, normalmap in CrazyBump and Specular in Photoshop.

Final textures

This is the final product with diffuse, normal and specular map + checkermap.

I also uploaded the model to a realtime render, which you can see by following this link:

Self evaluation: I'm very pleased with my own work this week. I think the goblet turned out pretty good, and I worked really hard on it, learning how to bake ambient occlusion as well to get some nice shading.

End of the week report - Assignment P01 Goblet

Learning to draw

With this assignment we started out with some drawing. We learned about perspective, and did some exercises on how to use single perspective and double perspective. We also learned some new techniques on how to draw better, like if you're drawing a person it's easier to draw if you think of what you draw as just lines and not things like ear, or nose etc. Lastly we learned how to draw something from different angles, like a glass that is tipping towards you or from you by 'unsquishing' lines.

 The Goblet

Initially I started working on a goblet out of a skull, but I figured I would rather use what we had learned this week, so on Friday I decided to start over and primarily use what we had learned. I decided to give myself a challenge as well, and model something organic, as I'm not used to modeling organics at all. After some research I landed on a tree-based goblet. My idea was to have a tree holding a cup, and with that in mind I started Googling!

With these inspirational pictures fresh in mind I set out to model my new goblet!

Working with Maya

I started with the base, making a simple plate, where my idea was that a tree had grown out of the ground.

I used the curve tool and extrude early on to create the shape of the tree.

Kind of looks like a wizard's hat!

Now I made the cup, so I would have something to shape the tree around.

Curve tool and extrude once again!

And again.

Gotten some nice branches to hold the cup.

Planning ahead where the next branches would go and come from was a big step of my work progress on this assignment.

Making a leaf to 'pretty' it up a bit!

I learned quite a bit this week, and I'm glad I managed to implement them into my goblet. I also thought up a story for the goblet, as I find it important to understand the origin of it.

The Tree of Life.

In the land of Ethas, the tales of The Tree of Life were many. None were accurate. Wars lasting decades were fought, kings were assassinated, lands were conquered. All in the search for the Tree. No one had actually seen the tree for themselves, but they all knew it existed. This was because of the immortals who walked the earth. The legend says that he who drinks from the water of the tree, will be cured of all aislments and live forever. What no one knew though, was that the tree was not a large one at all. In fact it was the smallest tree you could find, if you could find it that is. The tree was small enough to fit in a cupbard, but had more power than anyone could ever have imagined. As per now it was in the custody of a street urchin named Pug, who had gotten it from his father before he died. What Pug did not know, was that his father was an immortal, due to drinking from The Tree of Life, and had left his family to keep them safe. As the war for The Tree of Life went on, and many died in pursuit of immortality, the goblet sat in the care of the young boy until it passed to the next person worthy of watching over it.

Work report for Noroff 3DDA - P00 - Greek Temple

This project was started and completed on the first day of school, 18.08.2014, and we were supposed to build a Greek Temple out of primitives in Maya to familiarize ourselves with the software. With this assignment we were also supposed to learn how to submit our work.

I started out by Googling a reference picture for a temple to use as inspiration. This is the one I ended up using

I then set out to build the temple out of primitives. Because I've been using Maya earlier, I wanted to do tweak the meshes by ading edges and extruding etc to do a bit more with it.
This is the final product.
